Giving back is not limited to fish.
As part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, on the third Saturday of every year we lead a Project Healing Waters fly fishing fishout for disabled veterans at a local lake. Project Healing Waters is a national nonprofit that supports veterans and active military through fly fishing activities as a form of therapeutic outdoor recreation. Currently the event is held on Beaver Lake in Sammamish, Washington. In 2023, we had 17 boats, 34 veterans, and everyone caught a fish.
It takes a village.
To pull off this event, we partner closely with our local Project Healing Waters program, the Overlake Fly Fishing Club, and the Annie Pulliam Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. From morning to afternoon, volunteers facilitate positive fly fishing experiences by operating personal rowboats to take participants out on the lake, teaching them how to fish, providing equipment, and serving food. As an encouraging memento to keep fishing, we give veterans the lake flies that they used to fish. Between participants and volunteers, there are upwards of 75 people.
Show your support.
For this event, we need donations, volunteers, and equipment. Funding goes towards operating costs, such as gas, fly tying materials, accommodations, and food. Volunteers are needed to row boats, cook a barbeque lunch, tie flies, teach how to cast, transport supplies and equipment, and provide lots of enthusiasm and encouragement. We also depend on volunteers to provide boats for fishing and vehicles for transportation.
